Top 5 Tips For Designing A Great Presentation

by Eleanor Morath on 24th December 2021

Thousands of presentations are given all over the world, every single day. Yet, almost 45% of people who create presentations say they have trouble designing a compelling layout. This might not be something that is considered overly important, however it was also found that 91% of people feel more confident when they are using a well designed presentation. A visually appealing presentation shows your audience that you’re serious with what you’re talking about, as well as making it more engaging for them – all before you even have to start actually speaking!

Here at Capsule we realise the importance of good presentation design, and would love to share five of our top tips for creating an engaging (and all round awesome-looking) presentation:

1. Less is more

It is a common misconception that the more you put into your presentation, the more you will get out of it. In fact, the opposite is true. A presentation is a visual aid, rather than the main event (that’s you). You don’t want there to be so much information on the presentation that there isn’t any need for you to be there, so remember to keep it short and sweet.

2. Be consistent

Consistency is key when it comes to good design. It’s confusing to your audience if they have to process a whole new design every time you change the slide. If you have a brand guide for your business, start there. Use consistent colours and fonts throughout your presentation and it’ll start looking professional in no time!

3. Emphasise your main points

Make sure to visually highlight the points you want your audience to remember. Make the text slightly larger, make it bold or even just change the colour of it. Try not to surround it with too much other information either, it’s all about focus.

4. Display information visually

Where you can, try and arrange the information you’re trying to convey by making it more fun visually. This will make it stick in your audience’s mind as well as making the presentation overall more interesting to watch and listen to. Ideas could be to include graphs and charts instead of text with numbers, or infographics and imagery to support a main point.

5. Don’t cram content, use more slides

It is better to have more slides than to cram too much information into one. We know it might seem daunting to open up a huge presentation but it is far easier to process content when it’s spread out over more slides, the key to a good presentation is simplicity (as we mentioned earlier) so you don’t want to overwhelm your audience with too much information on one slide.

We hope these tips give you some ideas when you create your next presentation, but if you need some guidance, get in touch and we may be able to help. We can design you a branded presentation template to make things a bit easier! Contact us today for more information.

Eleanor joined us after achieving a BA in Graphic Design from the University of Suffolk where she also completed a design internship. She really enjoys coming up with new concepts and her favourite part of design is when an idea ‘clicks’ and all the possibilities are endless. Outside of work, Eleanor is a keen gamer and can often be found playing the latest pc games (It is no coincidence that her favourite games have a lot of design aspects!). She is also an animal lover and enjoys spending time with her cat, Casper, and puppy, Pixie.
