Animation vs Video – Which is Best For You?

by Jamie Gooderham on 7th October 2022

Stuck on whether to choose video or animation for your next project? Capsule’s guide to choosing a video style is here to help you decide. Depending on your budget, brand identity and time restraints, there’s a style for you.

What is the Cost of Production?

The cost of production is likely a big factor in choosing which form of video to proceed with. But, depending on the complexity, both animation and video can be just as expensive as the other. Video production requires a studio, lighting, camera gear, and actors, while animation requires state-of-the-art animation and design software and more time to produce. While cost may not be a deciding factor for whether you produce animation or video, there are a few benefits and downsides to both that are explored below. If cost is the deciding factor for you, then read our latest article on producing video content on a tight budget.

Benefits of Using Animation

Versatility

Animation provides the ability for anything to be created. If you can envision it, you can create it. Because animation is completely computer generated, there is significantly more versatility in what is feasibly created.

Presentation

Animation can also elevate static assets such as presentations, graphs, and charts, making them easier to digest and more attractive.

Adaptability

Animation is easy to update and can evolve with your company. While video would require a whole reshoot, animation can be changed as needed. From branding, graphics, logos, and people, your company’s evolution can be followed easily in animation.

Downsides of Using Animation

Time

It can be time-consuming. All of the intricate details and motion graphics have to be designed, created, and animated from scratch. While time varies depending on the complexity of the project, animation may not be a great option for time sensitive projects.

Creation-time

Secondarily to the time it takes to actually animate your video, detailed storyboards and scripts need to be fully thought out. Every moment in the video needs to be clearly considered to be created in the best way.

Personal-touch

Animation has no human interaction which can make it harder for your audience to relate to. There is no personal touch, but depending on the intention behind the video, this could be nonconsequential.

Benefits of Using Video Production

Interactive

Video can offer a more personal experience for your customers while they watch. Videos such as interactive product reels or testimonials can achieve that feeling quite well.

Faster

Videos are generally faster to produce than animation. Especially in small scale production, videos are perfect for time-sensitive projects.

Accessible

Videos are very accessible for all companies. While high-end equipment can produce amazing results, video can be done with a mobile phone. This allows all brands to stay up to date with the latest marketing platforms such as Instagram Reels or TikTok.

Downsides of Using Video Production

Restrictive

When using video, it is harder to make changes. If you wanted another scene or new dialogue, an entire reshoot is necessary, where animation would be a matter of clicks.

Planning

There is a lot of planning involved before the actual video is shot. From finding the perfect location to writing a script, videos can require significant thought and planning.
