What to consider when planning a website redesign

by Kelly Thake on 28th April 2023

So what do you need to think about when planning a website design? Let’s break this down into some main objectives:

  • What is the purpose of the new website design and build?
  • What is the primary goal of this new design and build? Are you looking to sell more products or get more inquiries?
  • Do you need to consider a rebrand entirely?
  • What has worked well for you before, and what hasn’t?
  • Is your website future-proofed? Do you have the capabilities in the CMS to grow your business?

Simply asking yourself these questions will help you set clear objectives and steps for redesigning and building your site.

Business requires investment to grow; part of that may be setting aside a budget to redesign and build your website. Of course, depending on your budget, it might restrict you in how wild you can go with functionality and design, but it’s essential to make sure you make the right decision.

We occasionally get requests about building sites in page builders and themes, and whilst this might work for some businesses, it’s a no-go for us. When designing and building your website, we ensure every aspect is unique, from the design to the code. At Capsule, we custom build everything, meaning no off-the-shelf themes, no page builders, and only using trusted, professional plugins. So does this mean my site will be limited to 1 template? Absolutely not! We custom-code multiple code layouts and use a multi-layout function, meaning you can custom-build your pages. Not only does this mean you get all the options to add content in the way you want it to sit, but you can also create endless pages, including optimised campaign pages!

Functionality we include as part of our work with you as standard, no matter how big or small your project is:

  • Completely responsive design working on all devices
  • User-friendly and easy-to-use edit and update functionality via WordPress CMS with secure login
  • Video embed through Vimeo
  • Provide a blog function for team members to update
  • Multi-layout content option for content pages

Do I need to consider a complete brand refresh/redesign?

If you are going through a complete change in the business, joining forces with another company or creating a sister brand, it might be time to look at a full brand refresh. So what does that look like?

Starting with a new logo design! It could be a minor update or a complete change; we would work with you to ensure intensive research into your competitors and the marketplace has taken place before meeting to discuss our findings. We would then collaborate to create new identities, including updates to brand guidelines, an absolute must for a brand refresh.

Once brand guidelines have been finalised, we can move on to redesigning the website. Kelly, our UX-certified designer, works closely with the design team to ensure every entry and exit has been thought through. Ensuring the design works responsively across all devices, we present our designs formally, taking you through step by step and ensuring you love the new brand as much as we do.

Moving your new website live

As part of updating your website, the main objective has probably been increasing traffic levels. Something that can easily be damaged if not thought through. Another service we provide at Capsule is delivering Technical SEO, Security audits and Website Migration Support. We work alongside you to ensure that the SEO value built up in the current site is migrated across to the new site when it launches and that any ranking fluctuations are kept to a minimum. For example, have you considered that the website title tags and meta descriptions are transferred and that your heading structure is correct?

If your website is not responsive, is out of date and is a pain to update, or you need help with a migration or brand refresh, send us an email or give us a call, and we’ll be happy to discuss your website needs with you.
